Default sportsman 500 efi-HO questions

Hi all,

Looking at new quads, and like the size and power etc of 500 sportsman (had 98, Dad has new 08 HO).

Questions, looking at Polaris web site (poor site IMO) and other Polaris dealer sites, getting mixed info. I know the HO has a pull start back up. Some sites are showing the EFI with a pull back up, others say nothing... One site shows 08 EFI with pull but 09 EFI w/o...? What is the deal here? Which have what? I like the option of the pull back up... you never know when a battery will go dead.

Also, what else is better on the EFI or HO vs the other?

Living in TX now, so not terrible cold or mountains, for obvious EFI benefits, but do like EFI on bikes, etc. However, I can fix carbs, but not injection...

Help. Thanks in advance for the advice.

Ken

All the 500s have a pull start. I haven't seen an '09 yet but I doubt they would take it off after ~13 years. The EFI has roughly 4% more power, EBS with ADC, and 26" radial tires vs. 25" bias plys. That's about it.

Going from my SP450 with carb to an Sportsman 800 EFI, man is it great. I can start her after sitting
for long periods and she starts right up. I like that! The power boost is great too. My friend with his 500 efi
blew my SP450 out of the water as we were racing on a straight away and then up his drive way.

Regards,

R'

All the 500 EFIs I've seen have the pull rope, The EFI is is trouble free with Jetting and Altitude, I think its smoother and does accerlerate better than the carb Model, as far as being good its smoother and more stable than Most or all machines that I've ridden, I did the Homework on all machines in my Budget and 500 efi came out winner everytime.

stendori is correct. The 09 500 efi and the 500 ho no longer has the pull starter. You can buy it as a accseccary though. It is in polaris 09 accseccary book

As for the backup in case the battery is dead, if its efi it wont run with a dead battery anyway, the fuel injection and fuel pump need power to work.

As far as efi vs. carb goes....like most say change in elevations and temp will help you out the most with the efi. I personally went with the HO model with carbs, since the efi was an extra $1000 and im not mountain riding. Some say that its hard to start in cold temps.....not always true i went and started mine when it was -5 with no problem.
