can a starter be put back together backwards?

Default can a starter be put back together backwards?

when i took apart my starter is it possible that if the magnets or whatever is backwords the gear would spin the wrong way.. hense not engaging my bendix?

i suppose it could happen but unless you werent paying attention when you put it together there is not way to get it backwards. on the brush plate there are a few tabs that stuck up. one of those tabs is right up against the end cap. on the magnet part of the starter on one end there is a little notch that the tab goes into on reassembly.

Before you pulled it apart did you bench test it, how about after you put it together...did you bench test it?

I've had mine apart a few times, don't think I could even put it together backwards if I tried. Not even sure it's possible??

well boys finally got her up and running... after all the BS... the starter had some condensation and grit in there... after cleaning it up lol my dumbass put the magnets on upside down so it DID turn the gear the other way... hense not engaging the bendix...

all good now
