Default Fine Tuning: Tips and Tricks

I had the following problems:
AWD didn't work (FIXED)
Gear Selector box all loose and dangly (FIXED)
Electrical Problems (FIXED)
Dies when I put it in Reverse (FIXED)
Runs a little rough (NOT FIXED)

I figured out all of the "FIXED" things with advice from you good folks on this board... THANKS!

So, you'll notice that it still runs a little rough... not bad... just not perfect.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to give me some pointers as to the various tweeks and adjustments that can be made to make it run as well as it possibly can.

It is a 95 Sportsman 4x4 400 with a Moose plow and 2000 lb winch. It has about 1100 miles on it.

As far as I can tell, there is nothing wrong with the engine other than the fact that it has spent a TON of time sitting dirty (filthy) in the back of a garage with intermittent abuse by my cousin about an hour per month (or less) with little or no maintenance.

What can I do, without spending much money, to get it running as clean as it can run? Carb? Exhaust? Filters? Lube?

If I'm really lucky, this will become a "tuning tips and tricks" thread.

Thanks!

clean your carb, replace your air filter and spark plug, oil change (if you havent done it since you got it).... then ride it for a bit and check your plug to see if you are running rich or lean and make adjustments from there. also check your compression

Clean the carb,How to I know your carb is not a "slide" but the rest is more or less the same procedure.

After cleaning the carb put in a new fuel filter and fresh gas.You may take the petcock out and make sure there is no dirt in it or the tank

check valve clearances too. if they arent open for the right amount of time it could make the engine suffer

I think the 400 sportsman was a 2 stroke in 95.

Yes, it was, but still a good tip for most of the other folks reading this.

Does it have a counter balancer oil dip stick on the side of the motor like the 400 2 stroke Scramblers have? If so then it may be due for a Fluid change.

If you were going to clean the carb and tune it maybe at least a new AIR FILTER (if not done already). Lots of opinions on this one but maybe a K&N Air filter may give you more AIR for better performance. But you research that one out here, lots of threads, all depends on your riding conditions. Maybe address your exhaust since you are tuning air flow. I don't know is your exhaust the type you can re-pack? Or is it better to upgrade that, I am just mentioning things as I don't have any exp. with exhaust "yet", LOL.

Glad to hear about all your successes!

Regards,

R'
