popping and flames

my 04 ds...starts up and idles great...will idle smooth for hrs...when i hit the gas it popps and flames shoot out exhaust...looks cool but cant ride....
then every once in a while it will be fine and run good...it has been really cold...like 30 or less evertime it is acting up...could it be the jetting?...
also the carb has been dripping gas if i leave the petcock on and dont use it..it wil drip onto motor...
oh yeah i ran out of gas also a few wks out...could it be dirt not allowing gas in..
this wkend it was 20 degrees and 30 mph winds and it wouldnt go anywhere on lake...idles fine..so i took it off the lake and up drive way...and it ran fine...wtf

i used to fight with my carb every month or so it seemed on mine i could not keep the float set right , bent it to tollerances, run it , and it seemed to spring back and drip now and then, also make sure you have the 45 pilot , not 40 , maybe , omr,or one of the other guys that mod the stock carb can help you better, because i just went and bought a new tm 48 ,love it start's easier and seem's
to be less sensitive to temp change. if the carb is flooding, you can't get the air screw right, so clean it , set the float , warm it up set idle adjust air screw, reset idle, recheck air screw, if everything else is/was right befor , you should be good

no doubt your main need's to go up at least one size, but if it happens right after idle it would be the pilot / neddle territory, look under your carb motor side, there is a hole with a straight slot [screw] in it . turn it counter clockwise [screw it out]
a little 1/2 turn ride it better , out 1/2 more . ect that will get you close . but you should set it as a explained earlyer. if you have the small pilot. about 3.5 to 4 turn's out from seated should be close . turning the screw in lean's it , outward richen's. you should prob raise the needle one clip, also.
