I wonder if it would be beneficial to use stronger valve springs when using a high rev CDI. Soon I'll install a HRC performnce cam along with hardfaced rockers and was thinking of getting better springs and retainers. The cam doesn't require shorter valve guides but I'm concerned that the stock springs may be too weak to perform well at the higher rpms.

 

Normally you only need the stiffer valve springs when you add a high performance cam. Adding the CDI box alone does not drastically increase your RPM's because the head won't flow enough fuel with the stock cam/valves/carb.

Stronger valve springs prevent valve float. I think valve float is unlikely with stock camming, although maybe some risk comes with higher rev limits (or I guess the factory wouldn't set 'em so low).

By and large, I believe most ATV engine rpm maximums are limited by their ability to breathe
(valve lift/timing/area).
