Carb running rich? Head pipe glowing.
#1
My girlfreinds 350 Grizzly has just recently started acting up. Does not want to idle properly but runs fine if you have the choke on a tad. Pulled the plug and it is black and also noticed that the head pipe is glowing even at at minimum throttle. Was told that it is running rich. Not real comfortable working with carbs but was told the pilot jet needs adjustment. Is that the case and how much trouble is that to do?

Actually a glowing header is usually the result of a lean condition, not a rich condition....... If you know it is running rich for a fact, yet the pipe is still glowing there is another problem.

Thanks for the input. I am just going to take it to someone who knows what the heck their doing. That will save me a lot of headaches and I can't get bitched at for screwing it up!

hey i had that same problem with my warrior years ago. we replaced the timing chain and checked timing could not figure it out till about a year later. the bottom timing gear had spun on the crank and was out of timing the gear is pressed on with no keepers to stop it from spining.

did find out that it was indeed running lean. A mechanic was kind enough to show me what to do to save some money. Tinkered with it last night and just about have it back to normal. Every once in awhile you meet some good people.

If the plug was black it is running rich.
I would guess that the air mixture screw was out of adjustment OR my second guess is that the chocke may be sticking. THird guess is valves may need to be adjusted.
Also if you do get it working correctly change the plug and make sure air filter is clean.

celltech you are absolutely right that there is good people out there and alot of them are on this site. I own a few quads and every single person owns and rides a quad and through my search this is one of the best tech and friendliest sites around. So have fun riding and learning to service your own machine ,because in my opinion it is very rewarding knowing that You (with possible help) tuned it .
