Starter worked about every 20th time , and I had gotten water in the case at one time . Clicked at the solenoid and pretty well determined the brushes were full of rust and stuck . After getting the starter apart there was one brush stuck . Really no rust or grime . The brush that was stuck freed up very easily and I haved messed around with them for a couple of days and can't get it to stick again .

Do I put in new brushes or put it back togeather the way it is ? We only have around 600 miles on the machine . Where beside the dealer is the best place to get brushes ?

if you have it apart and see some wear and most likely the brushes wouldnt be too much money i would put new in if you have the money and make sure to seal it up good to help keep water out. imo.

I have a 2001 Sportsman 500 that make a horrid grinding noise when starting and was told that it was the "brushes". I am relatively new to ATV's....okay very new...This machine is really for the deer lease here in Texas and is not used for mud, snow, water, etc. What would be you recomendation for it? something I can do myself or does it need to got to the dealer?

 

I thought I had the starter back together and ready to put back on but have a problem . After tightening the two long bolts that go through the starter body the thing is bound up and does not spin freely . When I back them off and hook up power it seems to spin properly . Is there a torque spec for this or should I just leave them as snug a s possible to spin and put it back on ?


ceking35 - up until this point this was a simple deal . I think you can do it yourself and save some money . The dealer will have a lot of time wrapped up getting to the starter if it is positioned the same as the 2004 . Save the man hours . Sorry I did not see your question until know , hope its not too late .
