04 sportsman stuck in awd
#1
I have 2004 sportsman 700 that would not come out of awd. I tested the wiring going into the front diff. and it tested ok. I even tried it with the plug unplugged and it still stayed in awd. I figured the problem was in the front diff. I took the diff apart and there is nothing that is broken and everything spins ok. If I put power to the front cover that houses the magnetic coil, should it become magnetized? How can I determine if the front cover is bad or not? I dont know what else could be wrong?

Just had my quad on the lift for the first time, checking things out...wondering if it's normal for the front wheels to turn in 2x4 mode when all 4 wheels are in the air...when I hold the fronts they won't spin...but will if in AWD...is this normal or am I about to have AWD all the time?

Isn't the housing made of aluminum? If so, the housing itself will not magnetize. Have you tested all of the wiring (including the wiring before and after the connection).......?
What about the wiring on the transmission switch?
What about the wiring on the transmission switch?

To first question could be damaged roll cage locking in awd constantly or armature plate could be magnetized to coil inside aluminum housing allowing full time awd. Power is sent to coil when switch is moved to awd position. When all tires are off the ground sometimes inertia will cause front tires to spin even in 2 wheel mode,BUT should be able to stop by hand with no resistance! In awd ALL tires will turn and you should not be able to stop fronts!

Thank you OPT. I've got nothing to worry about there then as I can hold them back when in 2x4. I guess I'm just getting used to my new toy, and wanting to make sure I can catch any problems early so it lasts forever
