Cooling fan motor
#1
Hello everyone. I recently bought a 1997 Polaris Xplorer 500. When I was riding up a steep hill recently, the lights suddenly clicked off. So I stopped and noticed the coolant bottle was spewing steam. The temp light never came on during this. I let it cool for a little while and then the lights worked again. Rode another 10 minutes and the same thing happened again. Noticed the fan wasn't running.
At home I jumped the cooling fan switch connectors at the top rear of the radiator. It has power but the fan wouldn't run. So I pulled the fan out and noticed the wiring was melted where it goes into the fan motor. Could barely turn the fan by hand. For the heck of it, I opened the motor up and the insides are totally destroyed. The windings are all melted and the inside is all blackened. I'm lucky it didn't start on fire!! Isn't there some kind of fuse to prevent this?!! The relay that clicked off, killing the lights obviously wasn't up to the task of preventing the meltdown.
Anyways, where can I get a motor and what other Polaris models have the same one?? Are there any decent aftermarket ones that bolt right in?? I looked up the price for a new Polaris motor and it was almost 250 bucks!!!
Also, is there a way to test the temp warning light function? I see a one wire sensor on the side of the engine....
Thanks!

First off welcome to the forums mrbear3800 and i'm having a problem with my cooling fan motor on my 2006 AC 400 FIS Auto 4x4 it's working but it makes a squealing noise when it first cycles on for a few seconds then stops the squeal , but i know it will only get worse and my quad only has 289 miles on it since i bought it ; i have a good dealer i've known since she was 4 yrs old so maybe i can get her to feel sorry for me and replace it for me free even if AC won't !
I knew it would be expensive for a new fan motor because nothing is cheap on quads and motorcycles much higher than parts for a car , i hope you can get one for your Polaris someone will jump in with the info you need ; anyway i hope for the best for us both and sorry i can't be of more help to you !........

it is really hard to fab a after market fans.. you can get small 12 volt trani cooler fans i know a couple guys that have done that.. and i was gonna try on my 94 but the front racks are so gay with allen heads i was like no... maybe on a diff.. it wouldd be easyer but you would have to drill... i found one for mine at a local but small dealer... not a big dealer.. someone who deals with alot of used quads.. new they are spendy..
ALSO WHEN MUD RIDING DONT JUST CLEAN THE FRONT OF THE RADIATOR,,, remember there is a back side getting just as dirty and the fan cannot work through it therfor burning it out by it being on so much.... true story... lol

Thanks everyone for the response , and kerbbirds i found a Spal Electric Cooling Fan on ebay for $69.95 + $10.00 shipping that's supposed to fit 05 - to - 08 Arctic Cat 500 , 650 , 700 model's ; from seller: univparts sellers feedback is 100% positive (10897 ) ! Oh and it's a new fan.
I'll just have to ask my dealer freind if there is any difference is the fan motor on the liquid cooled AC's before i purchase this fan , with the 400 the same size chassis being the same size it should work as long as there's no difference in the heat sencor's ; i know no dealer would sell me one for this price except maybe my dealer freind thanks alot to you all !...........

Bringing back old thread. Thanks for the responses. I have been in the process of buying a house for the last few months so the ATV was put on the back burner for awhile. Just got settled in recently.....
I've been finding all sorts of fans on ebay that look like they will work. When I was looking back in Feb, I came across a site that showed which parts will work across model lines but I can't seem to find it now. Anyone know what I'm talking about? Thanks.
