4x4 kicks on when button is off?

We got about 5 inches of the white stuff dropped on us here in Tn this morning. I took the 99 Sportsman 500 out and was on the concrete spinning tires in 2 wheel drive. all of the sudden, the front left tire kicks in and grabs some concrete too. it only lasted a second and then quit spinning. I made sure i had NOT hit the AWD button. what gives? it did this before when i was doing donuts in the mud, the same tire kicked in for a split second, then stopped. changed the fluid about 4 months ago, so it is up to par. AWD does work fine when on too. thanks

i assume you used the correct hub fluid as well right. seems light theres been a few occasions when guys have had this happen from the amt. plate becoming older and starting to magentise them slefd form excesive spinning. just a guess though. made the guys will chime in that this has doen it to w/ a better reason.

i am using the same fluid i have used for 6 years in it, Mobile 1 ATF. it had never done this before up until a few months ago. i noticed it while spinning out in a huge mud hole. it only does it every once in a while and its JUST the front left tire. it engages a split second, then stops.
thanks in advance.

just from what i have read over a period of time(no actually experince of it myself) is that the non correct hub fluid can effect the proper operation of the hubs and how they work. hopefully some of these good guys w/ alot of hub experince will chime righ tin for you bear and give a better reason. good luck

If still continues to lock up now and then,JUST replace BOTH armature plates as the other side will magnetize and do the same thing. NORMAL for the plates to do this as they get older. Frustrating, but easy fix!

ok, thanks. could you point me in the right direction for what all i will need to replace these plates? do i order online or this a dealer only thing? i am pretty mechanically inclined but never hurts to get put in the right direction. thanks again
