Default backfire?

Could be fouling plug, running lean, electrical problem, etc. Replace plug first, easiest and cheapest to do at first! See if helps.

the flywheel is what tells the motor exactly where it is in the combustion cycle. therefore it is keyed to the crankshaft so that it is always in the same location after it gets removed for whatever reason. the key it made out of a soft metal so if the motor backfires (which usually tries to send the piston in the opposite direction of its natural travel) the flywheel is still trying to spin the direction that it was going and the crank will usally go the opposite way. think of it as a shear pin. something has to give when that happens.

some times. other times its just a quirk. but if it is backfiring that means something is wrong. either the carb isnt adjusted properly or a valve is out of adjustment or the sparkplug is fouled. could be any number of things. kinda hard to pinpoint it over the net without being able to see it happen.
