Rear brake problem on 06 Rubicon
#1
My brakes been sticking pretty bad for a while and I finally took in apart tonight to see whats up. The inside of the drum looked horrible, was full of black crud. The pads have lots left on them yet and just need a little cleaning. I am hoping by getting this all cleaned up tomorrow and lubed up with a lil WD40 it will work like new.
Anybody else have this prob or have to clean them out? I dont even do any hard core riding except for one ride last fall when I buried it in silted up creek up to the rear rack. Which I'm sure thats where my prob started. I havent delt with rear drum brakes since my 93 Big Bear. So I kinda forgot how vulnerable drums are to ANYTHING.
Thanks

Honda drums do that. I'd use something more like high pressure grease on the pivots, and brake cleaner to clean things up.
You might want to replace the drum's seal, and the next time you are deep mud pull the drain plug out of the drun after the ride.
There are upgrade kits to put disk brakes on older machines, but I'm not sure if that includes the rear.

Yeah, I am very much looking into that. They rear kits run about $300 alone but I think are well worth the money. I did get everything all cleaned out today and the foot brake works great but the hand lever is awful. I am thinking their has to be grit in the cable somewhere. So apparently I will need to buy a new one somewhere along the line.
