Lower cam sprocket has a mark on it that lines up on mark directly at bottom. This will be TDC. Cam index pin lines straight up CENTER of head. Install sprocket and chain,THEN install cam tensioner. Adjust valves before you turn engine over,Then slowly pull recoil so tensioner can adjust! NOTE: Tensioner bolt must be loosened then tensioner removed before cam chain and sprocket work done. After tensioner is removed, remove loosened center bolt and spring, push tensioner plunger all the way in and reinstall AFTER sprockets and chain back on. Sounds like your timing is way off! Hope this help. OPT P.S. manuals are not expensive and can really help to keep from causing a lot of damage !

The Polaris manual even has a picture on cam timing, easy to understand even without instructions! dont know about Clymer or Haynes?
