Suspension spring compressor
#1
FYI, I was member MN04ATP but have not been able to sign in with my old ID since the software "upgrade".
I bought some heavy duty front springs for my '04 Polaris ATP 500 HO because I use a big front blade and custom fork lift regularly. (I will post pics soon.)
I was wondering what you guys use to compress the spring when you change out the spring or shocks? Harbor Freight has an external spring compressor for less than $15. The ATP Service Manual lists two Strut Spring Compressor Tools (PN 2871573 and PN 2871574). I haven't looked for the Polaris tools, but my guess is they will cost more than $15.
Also, if I upgrade my springs, should I upgrade my shocks? If so, what do you recommend for heavy duty shocks?
Thanks,
Dave

I "rented" a pair of strut spring compressors from Autozone. They make you purchase them and when you are done you return them for a full refund. If you keep them for over 90 days, you own them. It was $50. They worked very well. I tried the ratchet strap method first and it was a pita. I would highly recommend the strut spring compressors, all I had to do was attach them and tighten the bolt with my air ratchet. It was a breeze. I don't know about the shocks, I guess it depends if they are worn out or not?

I got a cheap set of spring compressors off eBay that work great. If you maintain your own wheeler then they are worth it because you will get plenty of use out of them. Shouldn't need new shocks but you can get the spring spacers from Polaris or make your own cheap that will help stiffen up the front more.

I did the rental thing from Auto Zone. Ultimately, it was free, and that fits well into my budget.
But if this is something you can see yourself needing more than twice, I'd take the suggestions of checking ebay or Harbor Freight.

You don't need to compress the springs to change the front, only if you change the rear springs. I've done both mine, took about an hour for each machine. Let me know if you want pointers, but it was real easy.
