Default Opinions on trade I might make Friday

I have a 1991 Jeep cherokee that is worth $1500 or so. It is running and good to go, it is just old and the title is also not available.(351k miles and a stick shift) I don't want to make a mistake because I could still wheel the cherokee and have fun if I have to.

I am looking to trade it on a 2002 Polaris Sportsman 500 H.O.. It needs a stator to run. He said we can hook up an external battery and run it for a couple minutes that way. Below is what he said about it. What else should I look for? Even if I have to dump say $1k to get it in tip top shape it seems like it would be worth it. What do you guys think?

"2002 polaris sportsman 500 h.o. 4x4
has jet kit, aftermarket drive belt, replaced back uppull rope but needs to be redone came unwound and needs better handle.
new tires, new coil, new spark plug and wire, new brake pads, newer axle, new master cylinder and brake lever, new fuel pump.
stator is bad will need to be replaced to ride, speedo is cracked, storage bags on fender don't zip right, battery may need replaced, wont know until stator is fixed."

I would keep the Jeep and turn it into a rig. There is a ton more you can do to the Jeep than a Popo!

You're probably like me. I have a Jeep wrangler that I built up for rock crawling. Been driving jeeps for years when I got hooked on Polaris quads. I can't believe I spent more for this quad than my Jeep is worth, and my Jeep has tons of extras from custom skid plates to custom rock sliders down the sides. Now my Jeep sits home while my Polaris's ride the toyhauler with us all around the country. Sort of sad, but I was ready for something different.

Well part of my problem is that I can't stop doing things to the jeep. If I were to keep it I would need:

1.bigger tires
2.Diff covers
3.Upgraded steering
4.Hand throttle
5.Front Locker
6.New shocks
7.More, more and more!
It seems like I need to upgrade something different all the time. Granted that is my fault, but it just costs a lot of money.

Wow. I thought the sportsman was worth more. I bought the jeep for $850 and added a lift and some new axles for a total of about $1500. So its really not an expensive jeep. I figured the polaris was worth $2500 or so running. A stator of the net isn't expensive and a battery shouldn't be bad either.

If you really want an ATV, I'd sell the Jeep yourself and take the cash and put it down on a newer ATV. A local dealer here has 2 2008 500 Tourings, 1 new 1 with 2 miles; for $6000.00. He also has a brand new 2008 Sportsman 400 HO for 4399.00.

My point being you can find a better machine, and it would be wiser to stick your money in it; rather than what you've showed us.

Myself, I would even consider an even trade. You are giving him a fully functional vehicle, you have no idea what you're getting. Once you tear into it, it may cost you 2k to fix that atv so it's safe to ride. Brakes, wheel bearings, tie rod ends, whatever else the engine needs, it all adds up. Unless he has reciepts for all the replaced parts, I wouldn't believe anything in the ad.

If you still want to gamble on it, at least take the tools needed to do a compression test, and verify it does run.
