97 500 Scrambler carb question

I know that the carb for a 500 Scrambler change after 97. My question is will the 2000 carb work with out changing the jetting? if you replace the 97 carb stock jetting with a stock 2000 carb will it work or will it have to be jetted.
Also I bought the 4 wheeel and the carb was mess up. They said that it was not running right taking fuel and the took the carb off going to have it rebuild and the guy broke the carb body and they didn't fix it. I bought the 4 wheeler.
I have put a 2000 carb on it and it run but not good. backfire/cought if you try to give it alot of fuel like it is out of time. I will idle fair.
Any Ideal were I need to start. What is a good service manuel for these machines. Machine is in good shape still has the orginal tires and they don't look to worn.

you could ask "FTWFLH" who is good on these years about it or he might post to it when sees the question. did you check the spark plug to see if it was running way to rich? not sure it they are the same size carbs. i think the non Ho carbs are smaler size then the HO model 500's so guess jetting would have to be differnt?? just a guess though.

I think it was 2001 when they changed, went with a bigger cam and a 40 mm carb instead of a 34mm. Ive done this change to my old 425, I'm running a 145 main and a 40 pilot jet in the 40mm carb, depends on elevation, I live at 5000 ft and ride to 10,000 at times.Hope this helps.

I had a car one time that acted like this 4 wheel -not taking fuel, backfire/cough the exhaust, give it gas and it spit ans spuders, start idoling real fast and dies if you give it gas,...................it was the mass air control sensort on the car. any thing like that on this machine? Any ideal what to check or where to start testing? All I have every worked on is 2strokes.

there is nothing like this on these carbed. bikes until you get into the EFI models.
ok i just cross reff. the parts and they are differnt but they are saying they they subituted the same carb from 97- 01'. the main jet for the 97' is a 125# and the 00' is a 155#, the piolet on the 97' is a 42.5# and the 00' is a 40#. im assuming the 00' carb is a bigger MM then the 97' which w/ the 00' jets maybe your getting too much gas and need to jet down. this guess an educated guess.

97 was the ONLY year the 500 Scrambler was a non HO.2001 was when the HO was first used on the 500 Sportsman.
Best bet is to find a carb from a 425 Magnum or a pre-2000 500 Sportsman.These should bet jetted correctly.If you use the carb you have plan on down sizing the jets on step at a time until you get it right.

VERY GOOD chance that the cam is bad on that old of machine.It acts just like a carb issue when it is bad.
