Starter, starter drive or battery?
#1
Hi guys.
Been a while since I posted in here, I guess I've been busy riding!
I'm experiencing some issues in starting the 2002 Polaris Sportsman 700 twin I own and would like to troubleshoot the problem.
Here's the symptoms.
With the battery fully charged, the starter turns the engine over slowly but it does start. Sometimes the starter makes a whizzing noise without turning the engine over and when I retry, the starter engages and successfully turns the engine over. It sounds to me like the starter is laboring and doesn't spin freely like the other quads... (Just an observation)
I believe the battery is good, but not sure about the starter motor or starter drive. Is there a way to trouble shoot the problem before purchasing un-needed expensive parts?
Thanks for your input guys!
Gary

well pull starting is out of the qestion for sure lol. if your 100% sure the batteries at full charge when your turning it over and its laboring, sounds like the starter might be dragging somewhat. might need a rebuild on the starter. imo

Brush kits are available to rebuild starters, plus also I would check condition of starter bendix, could be dragging starter down Good luck

Be absolutely sure the battery is 100% mine acted simular , thought the battery was ok, finally battrey quit, put in a new dry cell, starts better than it ever did, the dry cell has more cold crankin amps and the starter hasnt missed a beat, can you load test the battery at your auto store?

What do I look for when I look at the bendix?

Thanks guys, I'm putting that rebuild on my to do list.
BTW: Has anyone in here purchased a starter off of Ebay? I see them listed in there but wasn't sure what the quality would be...
