I'm a first time buyer and not to sure what models have problems. I'm looking at a 98 Big Bear 350cc to buy, it looks in good shape but I'm not sure if there are common problems with this model. Advice or options would be great.

Big Bears are known for reliability, because they are pretty simple machines. I have a Buddy who has one about that age and he goes in some pretty deep water and mud with it. I don't think he has ever had any problems with it. Most ATV's on the market are fairly reliable as long as you maintain them. If the bike in question looks solid and doesn't look abused, it will probably be fine. Good luck.

I purchased a 98 Big Bear in November of 97, I have had no problems at all with it. It is not an outstanding machine in any area, but compitant on all.

I have a 98 Big Bear Special Edition and have owned it since it was new. The bike will take you anywhere you want to go ... it just won't do it very fast. Mine is the 10-speed dual-range and it tops out about 60 km/hour (40 mph) and it seems like you are always wanting to shift up another gear in top end.

The only thing that is a pain with these machines is the sealed brakes (HA!) you will eat brake pads/shoes (especially in the front) like you have never done before. This is a minor inconvenience as they are easy to replace and not overly expensive.

All in all, this has been a very dependable workhorse and has given me (knock on wood!) no problems other than doing preventive maintenance so far (3 years and 2500 km on it).

Any further questions you have ... ask away.

Chow for now.
