Non Polaris oil in a pinch to top off?
#1
I use the Polaris oil/filter change kit on my XP's. What would be the best choices to top off if the level is a little low and I don't have the PoPo blend. Would Mobil 1 be good? Is the PoPo oil a synthetic blend? Can full synthetic mix with synthetic blend?

Brian.....Don't bother. A little low doesn't mean anything IMO. If the oil was below the bottom of the stick, that would be one thing, but if you can see it on the stick within the last one or two notches, just wait and change it out with Mobil 1 or whatever you choose. Not worth mixing oils IMO. -I just wouldn't bother, or I'd change the whole lot since it sounds like you're getting away from the Polaris brand oil.

Mixing synthetic with a synthetic blend is really not the problem. I believe the polaris oil is 2W-50 and I'm not aware of anyone making that combination. I believe Mobil is offered in 5w-50 and mixing that with 2w-50 will be were the problems arise.

I suppose it depends on which oil you are using. This quote is from the 850XP's Owner's Manual:
Polaris recommends the use of Polaris PS-4 PLUS Performance Synthetic
2W-50 4-cycle oil or a similar oil for this engine. See the table on
page 72 for fluid recommendations, capacities and plug torques.
Oil may need to be changed more frequently if Polaris oil is not used.
Always use 2W-50 oil. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for
ambient temperature operation. See page 125 for the part numbers of
Polaris products.
Perhaps they label their's as 2W-50 knowing there isn't another brand carrying that combination of viscosities?

A little searching and I found that PS4 oil is 0W50 and PS4 PLUS is 2w-50. Some say the oil is exactly the same. Some say it's not. It's probably a marketing thing, but I'll still buy the kits being they are reasonably priced.
The older twin oil change kits included PS4 0w-40.
When I bought new oil change kits for both an 800 and the XP 850, the kits were totally different. The filters were different and the oil was also. The oil for the 800 was green in color. I can't remember what the quart bottles said on them though.

Don't know what the actual chemical differance is. IMO as long as it is synthetic should be no problem mixing a bit. I would bet Poo don't have their own refinery so are just brand labeling someone elses oil. I use mobil 1 personally and have been for a few years along with a napa gold 1356 filter.
