Default No or weak spark when hot

I have a 2004 sportsman 700 non efi that will run and start great when cold but let run or ride for about 5 min just enough to let the fan come on and it dyes. I thought it was a fuel problem but after it did this twice i checked for spark and there is little to no spark. I think this could be a coil problem but my dealer thought on the phone that it was not. Please help.

it could be the cdi or the stator. get a manual and find out what the specs to test it is. then check the resistance specs while cold. then run it till it shuts off and recheck. problem should be found then

One thing i found out tonight is if i run it with or take off the front cover it seems to take it londer or cools down faster, so it must be something under the front above the radiator. Has anyone seen a coil ignition go bad? Also is there one for each cylinder?
Thanks

the coils themselves shouldnt go bad. (not sayin it wont happen just more unlikley than a cdi or stator) ..there is a cdi box up around the front..it can go back

Call the motorcycle repair shops in your area, they may be able to test it for you. Another option is a can of Component Cooler P/N 64-2341 from Radioshack.

Run it till it stops, then spray both sides of the CDI, wait a bit and try restarting the quad. If it fires, the CDI is bad, if not look elsewhere.

Speaking of elsewhere, did you try a new spark plug?. They do wear out and short out.

I will give that a try. I did however just change the plugs so I dont think it is the plugs.
Thanks

I'd put money on the stator. A friend of mine had the same problem. It was the stator.

How's the battery?. Popo's need a strong battery to run. If its the stator, try Ricky Stator for replacement. Ricky Stator: Manufacture of ATV & dirt bike stators, electrical componets, lighting systems, and suspension products.

Is this the early 04 with DUCATI coil pack OR later with different coil system? If has the DUCATI system then would suspect coil pack or stator. IF stator checks out bad the whole system is updated to later model components(stator, flywheel, individual cdi, and coil are sold as a kit.
