Default 400 Scrambler Jetting and Carb Ques

I've got a 99 Scrambler 400 4x4.

Runs good at WOT, but idles rough and not much power at any other rpm range.
Smokes quite a bit; haven't checked the plugs yet.

I've decided to rebuild the carb. Question is: which main jet should I buy and how do you perform the various adjustments, i.e. air/fuel, "clip" positions, etc?

I don't have a manual and don't have the $ right now to take it to the stealership!

I'm currently at an elevation of 4040 ft and operating temps here vary from 0* all the way to 90*. Most commone range will be 20*-50*.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I have a 96 400 that i am going through. my jets are 220 main, 35 pilot. clip position is not extremly critical to start with I would put it in the 2nd from the top. if you need to fine tune it you can move it up to lean down and down to richen up the low end to mid range. keep in mind jets dont go bad, unless you are talking about the needle and seat. the needle and nossle jet can wear out but the others can be cleaned and be good as new. Remember to make sure your clutching is good if not all the carb work in the world will not help. It can be very frustrating... i just rebuilt my carbs and clutches and I still have a dog.
