Question 300ex rear hub question.

Hi Guys,
Was wondering if anyone could explain how I can identify weather I need new hubs or a new axle. IE tons of play in the rear wheels. Removed the rear wheels and inspected the hub spline and axel connection and I can't tell which is wore.

The carrier bearing looks perfect. No play
Between the hub and axel there is tons of play.

So do I need a axel and hubs or just the hubs. Was thinking just the hubs..
Or can I just tighten the hell out of the hub bolt?

Ok, I'll assume you are correct when you say the bearings are fine. The hub can be tightened but if the splines are worn, no amount of tightening will help. Plus, it should only be tightened until it bottoms out on the shoulder that is on the axle, and then until you can get the pin in. I would think that since the hub is softer than the axle, the hub will wear first and that is your problem. Do you know a friend that has a newer 300ex? You could swap yours out and see if that's the problem.

Yep, yep.. My thoughts exactly.. My son has a 300ex and I thought about swapping but wasn't sure about them being the same part number. Thanks a million. Tim

I just repaced my rear hub a few weeks ago. Got one off ebay for 20 bucks. I have found out that many of the 300ex parts throughout the years are interchangeable. My ex is a 01 and the replacement hub was off a 96.
