Dealer respect

A guy I know completely drowned his brand new XP850 in a massive mud pit recently. Not sure of the details, but today I saw his machine at the dealer strewn all over the floor....engine in a box, wires and parts hanging off the center area where the air box used to be. It was an ugly looking mess with only 90 miles on it....all rusted. The moss green machine honestly looked 5 years old. One of the employees told me the guy came in and blamed them and claimed it was all their fault. He was all fired up and claimed he got screwed with this junk, cursing. When they pulled the engine, the case was full of filthy water and fine dirt...."rocks in the air cleaner", etc. Dealer said if he had just admitted he swamped it and needed help, they would have worked with him and Polaris to get as much through warranty as possible. Now they said he's just a simple liar (multiple lies) and they they will help with nothing. The latest bill was in excess of $3500 and may continue to climb with many weeks of back-ordered parts and no urgency.
Lesson 1: Tell the truth when you f-up. The dealer can figure out more than one might think upon inspection.
Lesson 2: Don't swamp your bike. It's not worth the hassle. I've come so very close a couple of times....never again after seeing this mess.

THANX!!! I've gone through this along with my co workers with irate customers that dont realize that our primary job is to HELP them! But they need to be upfront with us because it saves a lot of confusion and depending on the circumstances Polaris with the dealer "going to bat" for the customer, has made allowances in our past history such as discounted parts, parts only(customer pays labor) and such. Just depends on the problem!

Haha, good story.
It's people like that, that come on the forums and bash this or that and this brand or that brand.
I don't treat my machines like a submarine or bulldozer, and have had very few problems.
What did the guy have for an excuse? Did he just say it fell apart on him driving down the trail or what?

I have always been upfront with my dealer and they have yet to let me down. They have gone to bat for me with Popo, and won, a number of times. That's why I keep going back to them. Too bad the auto dealerships around here weren't as customer friendly. They are all getting too big for their britches. Went around town when I decided to go back to a 3/4 ton truck hit and up all the places I have dealt with over the years only to be greatly disappointed. Ended up driving five hours(one way) and got an awesome deal. Saved almost six grand so it was well worth the trip. Anyone in the upper Midwest that is looking for a great deal on a truck should try Lenzauto.com in Fon Du Lac, WI.

Great post, Funride. Honesty is the best policy. If you humble yourself a little bit it goes a long way towards someone treating you decently when you are in the wrong. I sped up to "beat" a yellow caution light recently. (Bad habit. I've been driving in Mass. for too long) I got pulled over and the officer told me what I had done. I admitted that I had rushed and shouldn't have done it. He came back and gave me a warning instead of a ticket. If I had been belligerent about it, I would have got a ticket.

Too many people these days seem to think everything is a courtroom. Admit nothing and lawyer up! Unfortunately, that may work in the courtroom, but most times not so in the real world (eg: this case). Next, the guy will be yelling at the insurance companies to replace his rig but it wasn't "his" fault!
Cheers,
