Question 800 renagade air filter

I own a 07 renagade 800, I put a k&n air filter on it, it did not make any differance in power or high end speed, I was told the air fuel mixture on the can-am could not me adjusted. The machinic who looked at my machine told me my machine was running lean because the air filter was taking in more air, and leaning the fuel out. If that where true wouldn't I notice a differance in perpormance?

When I first got my machine I could do a little over 80 mph, now I might hit 70 mph if I'm lucky, I put the old stock filter back on it, and no difference in how it runs and still can only get maybe 70 mph out of it.

Does any one know if I can use a K&n air filter on my machine with out damaging it, or if the air fuel mixture can be adjusted?

Will the on borad computer learn and adjust it's self

I would think the fuel injector ECM should adjust for the filter, if it can adjust for altitude, a filter change should be doable, unless you put just a tube and open filter on, that may be too much air to compensate for. If your speed has dropped, you may want to check out your belt and/or clutches, dirt and wear could be causing them to not operate at top efficiency and rob you of a little top end.

How did they determine the lean condition? If it was by checking the spark plugs, then obviously it is running lean. If they checked the spark plugs, but did not replace them, then shame on those mechanics.

One way around a lean condition is to go with a hotter spark plug, but not something I would recommend.

IMO...go back to OEM with air filter and new spark plugs. Your 80mph runs should return. Plus...again IMO...the K&N has no benefit performance wise on these ATV's. The only good...is that it can be cleaned and reused.

Good luck!

Thank for the reply, I did go back to stock filter to see if it would make a difference, and there was none, I know everything is good because I just had a 100 hr done on it. I didn't chance my air box when I put the k&n in it, so I guess I will just use it for an extra filter while I'm cleaning the other one.
It does seem like the computer would adjust its self, because it does adjust for altuid. I took it to a dealer for my 100 hr, and they are the ones who told me the air filter was leaning out my machine because my plugs looked like they where burning lean.

Thanks again

Default 07 renegade

You can't just make 1 change and be good, you will have to add a fuel controller and put in a little more fuel. the best upgrade is to go to the 09 intake and injector setup with a fuel controller like a power commander. i just had a turbo put on my 07 renegade and now use a power commander. I have a dobeck 3 optimizer that came off my bike with a dyno setup in it, hmf slipon k&n air filter, dynoed at 46 hp and 33 tq. I would be willing to sell you the dobeck with the dyno setup in it for 65 + ship.

my machinic did look at the pluges, he did change them, but he all so told me I could use my K&N, that it would not hurt anything, so I did put it back on, I think it does a better job at filtering then the stock filter. When I pulled my stock filter, I could see dirt in the tub that it connects too. I know thats not good.

I did change my air filter back to stock, I still could not hit 80, my best was about 73, so I guess that is the best I will get out of it.

Did you check out the belt and clutches? I know very little of the drive system on the Can Ams,but wear and tear on the belt, and clutch sheaves can make a big difference on power and speed. You may need a belt, a clutch bushing, maybe shim the secondary for proper alignment, etc. That is just one more thing I would check, your speed drop had to come from somewhere.

I just had my machine in for a 100 hr, I was told every thing was looking really good, I was told the valves where adjusted.

I'm wondering if I only got 80 mph out of it was because it was new, and now that is is broke in I can't hit that kind of speed ? I don't know any one with a renagade to compare notes with.
Thanks for the Idea,
Jeff
