Default Sportsman 500HO question

Hello. First post ever here. I hope some of you guys can be of some help. I don't have a sportsman, but i have a Ranger 500 which as far as i know has the same motor. My question relates to the carburetor. I'm not familiar with sportsman's but I think that there are some differences between the 500HO carb and the one on my 2006 ranger 500. Is there such a thing as a Sportsman 500 without the HO? Is that the carburetor on my Ranger? What i'm getting at is this......My carb is acting up so i'm thinking about doing a jet kit. They dont offer a jet kit for a ranger but they do for a 500HO. I've been told that with a k&n filter, the jet kit wont be too much for the motor. I really dont want to get into pulling out the cam and changing exhaust, but if the motor could withstand a sportman 500HO carb with a bigger throttle opening, then i'd consider swapping out the carburetor. Do any of you guys know much about these carburetors and if they have changed on the sportsman HOs during the years? Basicially i just need someone to pour some information on me. Thanks.

welcome. they are didffernt carbs by looking at the pn#'s the stock jets in yours is main-135, pilot-42.5, in a 06' HO its a 155 main, and pilot is 40 so you would have to play w/ the jetting and needles i would guess sinc ei belave the ho's carb is bigger then yours. this is just a guess mind you.

They tune the ranger to have more low end torque, the larger pilot for more lowend and the main is smaller meaning that at lowend it has a little more power and then leans out or more power in the top end of the powerband. Simple stuff it might even work for you with out rejetting. You could probally lower the needle clip and make up the power rich loss on the smaller Pilot with a new jet kit.

Thanks. I talk on PRC a lot lately but they're not big on 500s. In fact, the knowledge base for 500s on there is virtually non existant. I knew you 4 wheeler guys would have a lot more knowlegde on the motor. I did some searches on here and found some of the answer to my question. I just hate to open a can of worms by making a move and creating a chain reaction......such as putting in an H.O. cam, but then needing the 40mm carb to keep up with the cam, then needing the ranger 700 air intake system to keep up with the carb. I know how to make the thing run like a scaulded dog.....i just didnt want to drop $1500+ into it. For that amount I could sell it and buy a 700cc.
