Default AWD discussion

All -

I was curious why my front tires were not spinning when I was stuck in the deep stuff in AWD? My friend looking at the front who had to winch me out claimed my fronts weren't spinning but the rears were. Is this normal or something I should be concerned about?
(FYI, I was in LOW gear).

Thanks,

R'

Well R' it sounds like you may have broken your roller cage, but I would do some more testing to confirm it doesn't work

was the awd indecator on in the speedo? do some checking to make sure all is working before thinking the roller cage. if you was stuck and then put in awd while spinning then you could have easily broke the roller cage. check for power going down there first. imo

Interesting! Yes the SPEEDO AWD icon is on while engaged. This is interesting to me, almost in disbelief, I really don't think I could of damaged it before doing stuff and didn't over work her when I was stuck. Anything is possible I guess?

Hmmm, okay what tests can I do to determine if this thing is shot?

Thanks,

R'

Drain the fluid and see what it looks like. Dirty fluid or fluid with water in it will disable the system. Check the ohms on the diff coil.

1. Get all fours in the air
2. put the bike in high and spin the tires see if she is just late engauging
3. make sure there 12v going to the housing with the test light....

If it does not work after this then the roller or cage is wore out or broke.

Remember that the front diff is very touchy about having proper clean fluid filled to the proper level. Change the demand drive fluid, might be a simple fix.

Well I do need to change those fluids as well as my rear fluids etc. I still don't know what I could of done to do damage to the roller cage. I really don't ride it hard and when she got stuck I knew it wouldn't budge so I didn't over work it.

Also, how can I tell that the 12v is getting to the housing.

thx,

R'

i think you already did a sevice on the whole bike a while ago didnt you? guessing unless you got water in there its not a fluid issue.if you had a voltage tester you could check the 2 wires going down to the front end to see if you had power. just trace them down to see if they look disturbed or broke or anything like that. you can put it in awd and hold the override button in and throttle it in reverse to see if all wheels spin or you hear any grinding or what not. some times when the cage goes you can here it or feel differnt wheels trying to kick in. imo
