Default 06 sportsman500 pulsar/pickup coil

Here's the deal, I am sure my pulsar coil on my sportsman is bad. Naturally, Polaris is only selling the entire stator assembly for around $500 and won't offer just the coil itself. My question is has anyone been able to retrofit a coil from a 04 model into a newer model. My dealer said it makes sense if I can get it mounted that I can just solder the wires and go from there. I've been finding the older coil for $8 and if I can make it work, then I THINK I might like that a little better. I have been a reader of your forums for awhile now and figured it was time to join and what better time! I've been a Polaris owner my entire life and after the luck I've had on the 3 I own now, you may be seeing me in a different forum from here on out. Hoping I can get this worked out because of course... it is the wife's quad. Thanks in advance.

I'm assuming you have a carburated model? The parts book shows that a pulser coil is available(for the carb models) Part number is 3089254
I've replaced just the pulser before, but not on an 06, it was an older machine.
If your's is carbed, I'd change it exactly how you stated.
What I'm wondering though is if you have an efi machine, you may be mistaking the crank position sensor for the pulser coil. That possible?

It is an EFI. I actually double checked my work by running it down torn apart to my local dealer. I traced everything back to the stator and found everything was good. i didn't know for sure how to test the CDI or pulsar/pickup coil. The tech at Polaris verified it was my pulsar, so I'm guessing that with both of us coming to that conclusion, I'm reasonably certain. It looks as if the new pulsars (05+) run into a wiring harness and are different shaped. My pockets are screaming at me to find a solution on my own. I already don't like the bill to have them verity what I pretty much thought to begin with.

You have to wonder if the 2006 H.O pulse coil (#14) would not work it looks like the EFI pulse coil (bottom pic) alot, there shaped the same and look to mount the same and wire number. Polaris maybe just looking for a quick buck like when the tried to sell me a SPAL built rad fan for $320 that Spal sells on there own for $80 same model number and all.

2006 500HO

2006 500efi

Thought I would give an update on the pulsar coil problem..... I finally had some time to work on the wife's quad so after you guys thankfully didn't give me a reason NOT to try the cheap fix, I went for it.

I could purchase the coil for the 04 on-line for $12 after shipping while the coil for the '06 HO was like $56 through the dealer (only place I could find it). I decided to try the $12 coil and work my way up if it didn't work. Long story short, I dropped in the $12 coil and the quad fired right up!! I did have to shell out the mounting holes a touch as the coil was probably a 1/16" too wide/deep and actually touched the stator. Other than that, just some soldering, waterproofing, and re-assembly.

It was nice to finally get the wife out this last weekend for 4 hours of riding through the deep stuff. Boy, is she a happy camper to have her quad back. Keeping my fingers crossed on these things now. Have an 800 that is acting up, but will save that for another day/thread!! Thanks for the help guys.

Polaris wants a $500 stator change for a $12 coil ,its funny yet sad at the same time. Glad they did not rip you off atleast.

I hear ya TLC!! I'm still wondering if the coil off of the '06 HO might be the exact same as the EFI version they won't sell or put on. Like I said, there were tiny differences in clearance and looks of my original and the coil from the '04. Good thing was that my dealer actually attempted to call Polaris to question them on the compatability of the coils, and even they got the runaround and no real answer. So by dealership "standards" they couldn't put the non-approved coil in.

Like you said... amazing that the only step Polaris recommends is buying the entire stator assembly for the EFI models. Well... I'll chalk up a win for me!!
