Default 1998 sportsman 500 cooling fan motor

So I was plowing my driveway the other day and the over heating light came on. Sure enough the overflow was filling up at a rapid rate. The cooling fan was not coming on. I parked the quad.

Later on I tried putting current directly to the fan and it wouldn't come on. Chances are I have a bad fan motor. (seems to be very common on these things)

Now I did search and came back with a maker/supplier of SPAL (SPAL USA - The Industry Leader in High-Performance Automotive Parts and Accessories)
The thing is, my fan looks nothing like any of the ones pictured. Not sure if its because I have an older machine (1998), my fan has the motor with a shaft coming out of it, and then the fan has metal blades inside the shroud.

How had would it be to put one of the newer style fans onto my machine? Will i have to buy a different shroud? What fan should I replace mine with?

Any help would be appreciated.

My 2001 uses the 9" Spal 30100521 (under low profile fan of your link) it was the exact same as the stock fan that the dealer wanted $320 for! LOL.

As long as the mounting bolts align you should be fine. I think your ATV did not have the low profile motor but the longer type right? but no matter it just matters about the mounting bolts aligning up with the shroud.

I can rembr if the fan bolts to the rad itself or to a plastic shroud,if its the shrould maybe you can drill new mounting holes?

If i remember correctly the fan motor is not attached to the shroud or the radiator. It is attached to the frame rails just behind the radiator, and has the shaft that extends the fan blades into the shroud. I just replaced the radiator and the fan blade assemble less that 30miles (1hour) ago on the machine and the fan motor was working fine!

look on e-bay under polaris fans, they have the same fan for your application, around $100 bucks, you say you hooked 12 volts to the fan and it would not work so it must be the fan and not the temp switch.

I also had fan problems on the older machines. On my 97 explorer 500 I bought a $60 automotive fan from carquest. In order to install it I had to trim the plastic shroud so it fit tight around the new fan and then snaptie the new fan in place. It worked out great and its still going.

Yea I hooked 12v to the fan itself and nothing happened. The fan is really hard to move by hand so the motor is most likely shot.

I think I'm going to buy the shroud for a 2000+ machine and then order the SPAL fan for it. Should cost around $100 after all is said and done.

When you buy a Spal fan you get the whole thing, blades and motor, its just a straight bolt on swap. I got mine new for $65 off of e bay.
