Default Got A Steal on A 2001 Bear Tracker 250 but...

It doesent run but physically is in great condition. It sat for a long time and and doesent run so i removed the motor and took it to a local atv mechanic to have it inspected. He said the cylinder has rusted so it needs to be honed out and new rings installed. Thats cool but he wants to do a valve job and other things that he says should be done and his total price was $900. There is an internal part that is bad that keeps the starter from grabbing to start it with the electric start. The starter works but the bad internal part is like $200. I only have $125 in it and im thinking if i hone the head and slap new rings in it and clean the carb and pop a new plug in then get the pull start going, it should be fine. What do you guys think?

its hard to say really but i think hes talking about the starter clutch, which i think there one way starter clutches just like warriors and stuff, but if its as rough as it sounds then it would be best to hone or bore it with new piston kit or rings, and would probably be a good idea to freshen up the valvetrain a little while your at it but its hard for me to say without seeing it.

I just basically want to get itt running and was hoping i could skip the valve work because i dont have means to reseat valves. I had thought about buying a top end kit for 150 or so and doing it myself because im not willing to drop 900 in it but want to get it going because the frame and plastic have no damage and i know it would make a great work horse for the yard and farm.

yea i guess it just depends on what you want out of it and expect it to do...and also how long you wanna use it, sure you could prolly get it running for next to nothing, might run rough might run good its hard to say but how long it would last with doing the least it would take to get it going would be compromised, sometimes you can do stuff like that to get it moving and it may last years and sometimes youd regret not being more thorough with the engine work and it toasting a lower end or screwing up something in the head, or cause other parts to wear out faster or something, then again assuming you have little money into it there wouldnt be a whole lot of loss in the situation even if it turned out bad later on.

yeah, thats exactly right. Even though i dont have much in it, i dont want to ruin the motor either. thats not how i keep my stuff, regardless of its value. I havent went to pick the motor up yet but my plan now is just do the cylinder walls, put new rings in it and clean the carb. I dont know if the kit comes with a piston or not. I will check the valves and if they have no rust then i will just set the clearances and there shouldnt be any reason for going further. After that, i may flush the crank case with marvel mystery oil and then just run it a week with cheap oil then drain it and repeat that process for 3 or 4 times. The guy said he feels the tranny and clutches are in good condition.

yea seafoam works great also, some in the gas tank and some in the crankcase, then change the oil soon after you ride it a bit.
