How much will drilling four 1" holes in my airbox lid increase the power on my 87' 250x? thanks

It's barely a noticable differance. Don't do it if you ride in deep water.

 

Not near as much as a single 3" hole in the rear of the lid.
Just hot-glue some free-flowing fabric or filter foam over the hole if you're worried about stuff getting in. It's free and works much better than spending 20 bucks on a bunch of those 1" filtered plugs. Remember air flow is related to the area of the hole, and a single 3" hole has as much area as nine of those 1" holes (and probably flows the equivilent of over a dozen of them).

 

Why dont you just take the lid of instead of butchering it.

 

Motorhead, "a single 3" hole has as much area as nine of those 1" holes" that makes no sense! Pi x radius(squared) = Area of a circle. (3) 1" holes = (1) 3" hole. That's simple Algebra.

 

actually 1" would be the diameter, so .5" would be the radius.... so .5 squared=.25 X pi=.78 inches squared. 1 3" hole would be 1.5squared=2.25 X pi=7 so it would take 9 1" holes to equal the area of 1 3" hole.

 

Thanks, you beat me to it. Also, the airflow is actually greater than 9x, because of the way air flows through an opening, there is less 'edge' to the 3" hole than there is to the 9 other holes, thus less turbulence, and better flow.

Because when you take the lid off, you're filter is exposed to anything that wants to splash/fall into the airbox. With a hole in the rear, anything that gets in will fall to the bottom, and not hit the filter.

 

thanks for the help guys. I think im gonna stick with four 1" holes for now and see what happens. But as far as taking the whole lid off? haha! yeah right. talk about goin through filters. thanks
