Hey just gettin my feet wet in the forum and was wonderin,do I need to remove rear diff to replace input shaft seal? It doesn't look like that bad of a job any help is appreciated.Thanks

 

Someone else may chime in with a different opinion but I have done it both ways. The first seal I replaced on the input shaft of my front Differential while it was on the machine. Had a heck of a time with the tight space and my big fat hands. It was fairly quick this way.

Problems with this was less than a year later it is leaking again. Appears the bearing is also bad. Need to remove differential to get the bearing out easier.

I repalced the input seal and bearing onthe rear of that same ATV. I removed it from the ATV and it is not leaking. It was much easier to work on the bench.

So I think it is your choice.

Sure... but you know what they say about skinny hands?...

Difficulty was also getting the tools needed into the small area. I used an impact wrench to get the nut off the end of the thrust shaft which goes into the diff. Getting the drive shaft off between the output flange and the differential was fairly easy.

Once you get the nut off the thrust shaft all that is needed is to remove a washer, drive flange (part the drive shaft bolts to) and the seal is right there.

However, I would take a good look at how much play was in that thrust shaft because it may be leaking due to the thrust bearing going out. You may need to replace both.

If you have a bearing shop locally you can probably find the seal but the bearing will probably have to come from either AC or some place else.

I like to order my bearings from a place called AllBallsRacing.com they sell kits with everything you need for a certain component.
