How new is this supposed to be? They have had a posi diff replacement for a while...The downfall is that it is full posi all the time.Is this new unit able to go from full lock to open diff?

Dyneer/Tractech makes the Detroit Locker. I have one in the front end of my truck. That would be the perfect solution to the limited slip(posi) front diffs on most quads. Since its an automatic locker, if you are driving around with the front end disengaged, but with the hubs locked, it works very well, automatically unlocking the outside wheel while in a turn. You hardly know you have a locking differential in there at all. However, once you engage the transfer case it acts like a fully locked differential. Which is great for traction, but a hand full in the steering department. Which is why I have always thought that it would be the perfect locker for those quads that have a 2WD/4WD option.
Having had a alot experience with the Detroit Locker in a front end, I know it would work!

For ATV applications, it's mighty new, kingmort.

A Detroit Locker is an "automatic" locker; it locks the two axles when sufficient torque is applied to the driveshaft, forward or reverse. Otherwise, the differential performs "normally," permitting rotation of the wheels at different speeds (for easy steering and minimizing tire wear).

I have a Detroit Locker (rear) and E-Z Locker (front) in my F-150; they really, really work.

I have long posed the question, "Why don't they make a Detroit Locker-style differential for ATV's?"

Looks like, High Lifter (and TracTech) have done it! Congratulations to 'em, here's wishing 'em success.

Treefarmer and GrizRick thanks for your inputs! I have a Y2K Kodiak 4X4 and would love to have the two front tires catch evenly when needed. With the electric switch to kick in out of 4wd, I was hoping that this new HL locker will work like yu stated on the trucks. Some truck mechanics I know said the same thing to me as you have.
I have ask this same question on the polaris and yamaha forum sites and this has been the best response, again Thankyou both!
Enjoy the Ride
