Ok, I have been out of the forum for awhile, so if this is a beaten subject just hang with me. I am thinking of an EPI clutch kit for my '99 to help with the 27" XT's. Whats the scoop??? Are they worth the $$, or a waste of time??

I don't know about the EPI kit but the HPD kit works very well, i just installed there progresive kit with both springs, 55 grm weights, and split cut helix, low end is greatly improved and will now pop a wheelie (never would before)

What part number did you get on the split helix?
H44/36s?
How much is the kit?
Thanks

I think the helix was a 38/42, the entire kit was 159.00, and installed in less than an hour. RD

I like my EPI kit.

Interesting though, this talk of weights. 44 is stock???

I forget the guy in WI here who runs 55 as well. That's a LOT of weight change!

I think 46 is the stock shift wt for the SP500HO. I put in 50.5 with the green polaris spring, this is the stock shift wt for the non HO SP500

Keeps the rpms down so it stays in the power band.

I had a 500cc 1999 Sportsman. With installation,I paid about 230 dollars for my EPI clutch kit. What a WASTE of hard earned money! It raised the engagement rpms a little higher and that was about it.

On my 2000 400cc Xplorer,I installed a 25 dollar green primary clutch spring, and it did more for my performance than the ENTIRE EPI clutch kit did on my Sportsman,I DO NOT recommend a EPI kit on a 99 Sportsman!

Just adding more weight alone will not help. You have to change the primary spring also. Otherwise you will under rev, lugging the motor to much. But, by just adding weights and a stiffer primary spring may help, the helix has a lot to do with shifting especially back shifting. Finding the right combination of spring weight and helix, not to mention secondary spring, ends up being a science and literally next to impossible with out a tach! Guessing gets you nowhere!

The way it was explained to me a long time ago, the more weight "clutch weight" that you can get your motor to pull and still maintain peak engine RPM throughout the power band, the harder it will accelerate making the most of the power your engine has.

From my experience, no ONE clutch kit works for everybody, they all need to be fine tuned! Adding bigger tires, rider weight, elevation, riding conditions - mud, snow, bare ground, ALL require different clutching. That's why stock clutching works everywhere, but not to peak performance everywhere.
