Default bill of sale and title issues

i bought a quad runner about six months ago. i did not get a title bill of sale or anything i traded it for my go-kart and cash any ways i just traded my 230 for a rm250 the guy who i sold it to wants a bill of sale i do have the guy who i got the quad from his number and where he lives but its real sketchy.... hes ghetto the quad was spray painted and the ignition was broke so im assuiming it was stolen. but not sure you can only trust'em as far as you can throw'em. one day i was riding and the cops found out where i live so when i came home they were waiting for me they never took the quad or ran the vins or anything so i thought nothing of it. so if the guy who i sold the quad to gets caught and the vin gets ran it being stolen will be on me?

Quite a few different ways that could go. A lot of that depends on who's knocking at your door.

Techinically, if it turns out to be stolen, you've sold a stolen item and are liable for that. Even though you know who you bought it from, you have no proof of that and it puts you on the hook, not him.

Chances are if it is stolen, the person you bought it from has more stuff that probably doesn't belong to him. So keep all his info handy.

If you have a bill of sale from the guy you bought it from, then you have a paper trail that leads through you to him. IF the quad ever does turn up as stolen, it will get traced back to you, but you then have proof that you at least purchased it, which will help.

If you do not have a bill of sale from the guy, then the trail ends with you unless they cops can track him down (quite unlikely). In this case, basically you are screwed. It sounds like you have always suspected that this was stolen, now you are paying the price.
