very hard i had to set it straight up in the air on the back tires to get the top bolt off the starter, i had to cut a 10mm socket and drill a hole through it so i could stick a screw driver in the socket so i could turn the bolt , i was not comfortable trying to remove the clutch so i chose to do it that way, it wont be so hard the next time because now i know how to get it off

Default The Dreaded Click

When you removed the starter, did you check the starter pinion? It causes the dreaded click when it corrodes and will not freely engage.
