Boost Engine Power - Sportsman 500 1998
#1
Hello All members,
I am a new in this forum, looks very nice.
I have a Sportsman 1998 500cc,
i want to boost the acceleration by make the engine stronger,
My ATV is too heavy and hourse power of 32-34HP,
I was thinking on :
Bigger Carborator ? 36mm / 40mm ?
Jet Kit ?
What you suggest ?
Thank you

Keep it stock unless you don't want reliability. A new belt and some clutch work is your best bet if you have a little coin to spend. If the engine runs well and doesent smoke don't mess with it any more than a new air filter and an oil change. It's a 12 year old 500cc utility atv that weighs 700 pounds, use it for what it is.

My only problem it is in the Sea Sand,
If i have in front of me a long hill, the engine is difficulty to climber,
and i hear that the engine running on middle range of R.P.M
in i feel if the engine will running on high R.P.M the engine will out more power and climber on the hill more faster.
so i think to change the weights of the drive pulley, to 1 or 2 level more lightweight, to make the engine work in more RPM.
what do you think ?

Yes you could drop 1-2 grams on weights should help climbing sandy hills keeping rpm's up. On the flats or hard trail machine will be slower and over rev.

maybe it just needs a thorough going over, you know a fresh plug, carb .adjustment, maybe adjust the valves.
My old 425 was getting to wear it didn't want to rev and i cleaned the carb. and set the valves(they were wayyy too tight),and when i got done it ran like a new one.

You can turn it into a H.O, buy adding the 40mm carb and high duration cam. Thats the only differance beteen a regular 500 Sportsman and a 500 H.O. or buy one of these stage kits.

Check the buttons in the secondary clutch, they may be worn so its not back shifting right, also you could change the spring in the primary clutch to a white, that would make some diffwerence in engagement rpm, the next step would be a green spring but they seem to be too much without bigger tires ect.
