1998 Polaris Xplorer opinions?
#1
I saw an ad for an Xplorer 400 4x4. It ain't cheap at $2500, but it's in my price range. It has a winch and plow, supposedly 345 miles and looks really good in the pics. How hard is it to get parts for these older machines?
Any opinions (good or bad)? Thanks in advance.

Why is that??
dirtdame...I have the same machine.
I wouldn't trade mine for a equally priced/year sportsmans...parts are readily available and relatively cheap. The 400 is quicker, faster and lighter than the 500's, not to mention it's easier and cheaper to work on. It can handle a heavier load and more tounge weight than the 500's due to the solid rear axle. It's also just as reliable.
Don't get me wrong...I like the 4 strokes...but there is nothing wrong with the 400 xplorer...or 2 strokes for that matter.

You can get any part you want for it. OEM motorcycle and ATV parts from Honda, Yamaha & Polaris – Cycle Parts Warehouse. the 400 2 stroke is a reliable motor, the chassis share 80% of it parts with the sportsman and 90 % with the Magnum.
I.ll spend more on a mint 99 before a fair condition 2006 ATV .

If you change the oil in the 500 like you should and use GOOD oil not the Polaris crap you can get thousands of miles without doing anything to the engine except valve adjustment.
If you ride the 400 the same amount of miles it is going to cost you a lot more just on top end rebuilds not to mention the bottom end.

a 400 2 smoke is a awesome engine Id take that over the anemic 4 poke anyday.2500 is better then 8 grand for a new 1.I say see if he'll come down to 1500-2000 or look into Kelly blue book and NAda guide as your equalizer on the price.Good luck and welcome to the 400 club,I have a trailblazer 400 ,only thing I dont care bout is the top heavy frame, this thing would kill 4 stroke 450s if they put it in a decent 450 frame lowered the CG on it.

Polaris oil is better than some of the crap yu buy at Walmart but it likes a lot being as good as most good synthetic oil.
If you run a 400L engine over 3,000 miles it is ready for a top end rebuild. If you don't do this sooner or later you WILL destroy the entire engine.
I don't care how cheap these parts are. It WILL cost you a lot more in the long run to ride a 400 than it does a 425 or 500.
