Default 500 Sportsman

My sister in-law took my atv muddn, and got water in the pull-starter!?! The handle must have been unseated. Now the machine wont charge the battery, it wont start with the key. It starts on the first pull with the pull-starter. I put a new starter and battery in it, plus had the rewind cleaned and dried. Is there a problem with the coil in the rewind? Need HELP!!!!

Does the motor turn over with the electirc start but just not start, but will with the pull rope? If so take the recoil cover off and clean betwwen the flywheel and Pulse coil. It will fix it right up,happened to me.

I silicone my rope handle down in place,to many exspensive parts in there that do not like to get muddy.

Default flywheel

Do i need a puller to get the flywheel off? I'm a rookie at fixing things, but i'd rather not take it to a dealer and have them charge me an arm and leg to fix it. lol

Yes you need a puller. An automotive harmonic balancer puller works fine.

You only need to take the flywheel off to get at the stator, if it starts with one pull than the stator is working.

Maybe I missed something here but you said the battery won't charge. How many volts are you pushing at an idle? Should be 13.5-14.5 If it isn't then I'd suspect the stator or rectifier. Did you clean the bendex? What year bike is it?

My guess if it not charging is the rectifier before the stator. With bad stators its more common they just fail,no spark, nothing. Like a light bulb, they work or they just don,t work at all.

Its a 2001. I took the flywheel off, cleaned around stator and pulse coil. None of it was that dirty. Put it all back together and it wont start with the key, it turns over but wont start. So i pulled the pull start 1 time and it started. The battery is 2 months old, so i put it on a trickle charger for 2 hours, unplugged it and turned the key and the atv started right up. It'll start like that for about 2-3 days then i'll need to charge the battery again.

Did you gap the pulse coil correctly to the fly wheel?
