Default Fuel

I have a 2004 Polaris 700 Sportsman EFI. What cycles the fuel pump to pump fuel? Mine seems like it is running out of fuel after running for a short time. I have had it to the dealer and they told me it is the fuel pump. I have my doubts. Now here is the kicker. When it is doing the problem, I can turn the key off and on quickly and it will run for another couple of minutes. I can do this several times. There are no codes showing. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I woudl think that every time that you turn the key you start the cycle and that is why it runs for a period of time afterwards as you have charged the fule rail. I am not sure where the fuel filter is but I assume that if it was at the dealer then it was changed. Something crazy but most fuel filters are one way filters with an arrow on them to indicate the fuel flow direction. Something to check? Other than that and a fuel pressure test, the dealer's diagnosis is most likely accurate.

As Bowana mentioned, its the EFI cycling - Whenever you turn the key on, it cycles the fuel pump. Same thing happens on EFI motorcycles. With regard to "seems like it is running out of fuel after a short time". 2004-2005 700 Sportsman's get lousy fuel mileage. Great machines, but small fuel tank and lousy MPG, make it seem like you need to fill up about half way through a ride.

i would think fuewl pressure is what makes the pump cycle. however the fuel pump could be going bad as some of them when they heat up start to break down. you can buy an aftermarket fuel pump to replace it instead of oem replacing the whole fuel tank w/ the pump.
