Default 98 Kodiak 4x4

Just picked up a Yamaha Kodiak 400 on the cheap. Had to clean the carbs to get it to run, and it idles kinda low until it warms up. I think this is normal for them though. What I don't understand is how my Kawasaki Lakota 300s are faster than this thing. Its kinda a slug for a 400. Its got 7000 miles on it, which are alot for an ATV but it seems to run OK and doesn't leak anything and the 4x4 works.

So I was cleaning it today and noticed on the crank case above the brake pedal there is a sloted bolt sticking out and it says forward pointing in one direction and reverses pointing in the other. It looks like you stick a screw driver in and adjust it for something, what would this adjust? I'm secretly hoping it adjusts the speed or something, it makes alot of noise when you get on it but doesn't really have the umph i'm used to. It seems to top out at 25mph if the speedometer is to be believed...

That ATV is really a Big Bear 400,there geared really low,it will scream in 5th gear and only do like 40mph tops. A 300 Lakota is much faster. 25mph seem really slow even for it, does it have a low range tranny?

Thanks for the info, what's the difference between a big bear and a kodiak? Any idea what the adjustment screw above the foot break pedal is for?

In 98 the Big Bear was a 350 (348cc) and the Kodiak was a 400 (386cc). Then in 2000 the the Big bear had the stroke increased 7mm to make it also a (386cc)

here they are side by side http://www.powersportsnetwork.com/en...le1=568&go2=Go they misprinted the Kodiak as a 400cc but if you look at the bore and stroke its the same motor as the Big Bear.

That is the shifting clutch adjustment screw,Only for adjustment in free play in the shifing.... IMO leave that along. If your clutch is slipping then this adjustment won,t help much unless someone has it off bad already.. and clutch plates are not touching good...
