sportsman 335 front hub seal
#1
I have about 2700 miles on this quad. I started to notice a leaky front hub seal. I guess I should just figure on doing the wheel bearings while I'm in there as well. The manual says to REPLACE bearings every so many miles. Looks like AM kit that will do bearing/seals for both sides for around $50.
Pulled the first side tonight to start to get it cleaned up. The sealing ring (the part the seal rides on) looks to have 3 shiney spots where the seal was riding. I wouldn't call them grooves but you can kind of feel them if you try hard. Think this will be ok? Also, I wasn't planning on going any farther than the 2 outer bearings and seal. The shaft and other bearing/bearings remain in place. Should I go farther so that I clean out all the old fuild? Or can I just "flush" it out from where I am right now?

The light grooves are normal,do not disassemble the roll cage or bother the garter spring on it but inspect it for burrs ect and clean it,I use brake parts cleaner to clean everything, inspect the armature plate "has 3 tabs that mates to the cage" for uneven grooves,if they are deep or uneven replace the plates.I always lube everything good with Demand drive fluid, fill at 4 or 8 o-clock and torque by the book which is (very important) for the Hilliard setup to operate proper. If you need the specs I can dig them up for you if you do not have them

Here are the specs for the older Hilliard Set up: 1.Torque spindle nut to 160-170 inch lbs NOT ft lbs. 2. Back off nut 1/2 turn 3.Rotate axle several revolutions by raising rear wheels with the atv in gear 4.Re-torque hub nut to 108-144 inch lbs. "do not exceed 144 inch lbs."

Thanks for the specs. What should I do about the inter part (bearing and shaft within the shock tower). Should I remove that bearing as well so I can flush that part out as well? Or just do the outer hub part and call it good.

The axle shaft you leave unless you need to replace the axle seal. If so the inner bearing behind the armature plate or within the strut will come out with a magnet or a pick if my mind serves correct and pull straight off the axle shaft to replace or clean. If you need any scans from the manual I'll post them
