The Yamahas use the 2 bolts on the back of the swing arm to move and tension the carrier and chain. You will see 2 long bolts with jam nuts on them, loosen jam nuts and turn in bolts to tighten. Turn each equally a little at a time until you get the slack out, you want to see about 5/8 to 7/8 of an inch of chain movement in the middle of the chain, best thing is to have someone sitting on it while setting up, this puts the riders weight into the tensioning, so it wont snap from over tightening. Biggest thing with the Yamaha set up, make sure you turn the bolts equally, or axle will sit crooked, possibly throwing chain or causing other problems.

your doing maintenance to it without a repair manual? thats your first mistake, i recommend getting one, it'll save alot of time searching the web for these simple things. what the previous poster posted i assume would be right for chain tension, iirc on my warrior(which is only 3" longer swingarm) requires 1-2" of play if i recall correctly, have to go check my manual

And put on a hat! It's cold outside.
Ok, that was just something my mom used to say. But you know you can't argue with mom.

you also need to loosen the bolts that mount the rear axle on the carrier or you'll end up digging those bolts into the swingarm and not really get any more tension on the chain. loosen those two bolts enough so that it moves and then tighten your chain. then make sure to torque down those two bolts again.
