I recently have done these mods....
K&N filter
XR cam
Port&Polish
Lectron 38mm carb
11.1 .80 over JE Piston
LRD full exhuast system
WB Rev Limiter

My question is......will the HRC cam give me power for my mods than the XR cam?
I really like the XR cam. But i would buy the HRC if it will give me a noticable power increase.

I don't have experience with the XR cam but I just installed the HRC cam and am breaking in today. Before I got the HRC I bought a used WebCam 450/451 from East Coast ATV. I never installed that cam because it had visible wear on it. As I understand it, that Web cam is very similar to the XR400 cam. Comparing the size of the HRC cam to the size of the 450/451 there is a big difference in diameter on the lobes. The measurement across the lobes on the HRC cam is nearly 1/8" greater than the WebCam. This doesn't necessarily mean higher lift but it is certainly is a more robust cam. If you are interested in the HRC cam, you can get it from Service Honda for $270 or you can get a copy from Al Baker's XR's Only for $180.

Thanks for the reply. I may be intrested in one. But let me know what you think after you have broken it in today. If you can notice a differance from the web then i'm sure i can notice a difference from the xr.
Thanks, Aaron

Do you need heavy duty springs with the HRC cam?

I don't think that I need heavier springs to run the HRC cam. I have asked several technical people at various performance shops whether or not I need to upgrade the springs. What they all said was basically that I didn't need new springs unless my stock ones had "taken a set". They also said that I should NOT get heavier springs if I do get new springs- just get more durable heat resistant spring that are the same weight as the stockers.

As far as the difference between the HRC cam and the XR cam- I can't say because I never installed that first cam that I bought (the used 450-451 WebCam which is similar to the XR400 cam). I still have that cam and may install it some day, just for kicks. However; from my riding last weekend while doing the break-in procedure, I can tell you that there is a huge difference from what I had. Before the latest mods I had a 10:1 85mm piston, stock cam, e-series, K&N, CDI, and 14 tooth front sprocket. This thing rocks now! I was careful not to open the throttle more than half way -but I wasn't sure because half throttle acceleration felt close to what full throttle used too! There is strong bottom end AND it wants to rev really hard. It was a nearly irresistable temptation to open the throttle wide open- but I didn't. After this tank of gas the FCR carb and a 15 or 16 tooth sprocket are going in and then we'll see what she can do.

Do you think you need to hardface your rockers with the HRC cam.

LDJ, check out XRsonly.com under the engine section. They list a HRC copy cam shaft for $179.95 and say that it is compatible with stock rockers! It doesn't say anything about a core charge either. Looks like a good deal to me.
