Yamaha 350 Warrior running rich?
#1
Hey guys, a buddy of mine bought a 97 warrior 350 and he got it for like 300$. Obviously because he got it so cheap there were some issues, the guy who he bought it from said it hadn't been run in about 6mo. We got a new battery, spark plug and starter coil I believe. Once we changed out all the parts we tried to start it and learned it wasn't geting any fuel so we took the carb off and checked to see if any fuel was getting into the carb at all and come to find out it wasn't, so we got the good ol' air hose and blew everything and finally cleared up everything and got the fuel into the carb. SO! It starts and idles but whenever you give it some gas it sounds like its about to bog out, the rpm's never go up but it does idle. I am by no means a mechanic or really have any idea what I'm doing, I'm just kinda self teaching in a sense on this project. From what I know I would say it's getting way too much fuel and/or the idle is too high (doesn't sound like it) and the RPM's won't go up. Also, when I pulled the spark plug after it has been idling for about 10-15mins it was burnt to a crisp! Which also leads me to believe it's running to rich but I have NO IDEA how to fix that, was hoping one of you knowledgeable mechanically inclined courteous people would help me out. Thanks in advance for all your help and sorry the explanation was long and painful to read ><, Oh! and when it's idling there is a huge CLANK, CLANK, CLANK every 1.5sec or so... NO IDEA what that is, spark plug is gapped correctly and has enough oil. *NOTE* Wasn't sure where to post this but it's also in general discussion > technical stuff *NOTE*

the one thing everyone overlooks when a bike won't go over idle, especially if it starts popping and backfiring really bad when you touch the throttle, is the parking brake sensor, those go bad, or can go out of adjustment, and its causing the governer to not let the bike go over idle speed, it'll also cost you a few plugs because of the way it makes it idle.....i'm almost 100% positive this is your problem.
you may also want to consider getting some carb cleaner and going over the carb really good with it, spraying it through the jets and every other part, if that doesn't fix it the carb needs a rebuild.

happy to be of help, i highly recomend getting a service manual though if your friend plans on keeping it a long time and doing all his own work, they're very helpful, and break down every single step involved in doing ANYTHING to the quad, tells you all the torque specs, fluid amounts....heck even tells you how to rebuild the engine and transmission with a breakdown of pictures.
also a warrior has a higher rpm for idle, i'll have to look at the service manual again but its supposed to idle high, but your not supposed to let it idle long, otherwise it'll overheat.
