Default KFX80 Stalling - wont continue to idle without choke

Hello looking for some insight.

2006 KFX80
About 10-15 hours bought new last year
Restrictor and throttle limter removed
Needle moved 1 notch richer
Has operated as expected for a year post those changes
About 2 weeks ago it started fine with the choke
Kid rode it and after a little riding when he would stop it would shut down
Choke it and it would start again and even idle after the choke is off

Pulled the plug was dark and crusty, new stock NGK installed, no change
Pulled carb cleaned so I could see light through needles, stripped and cleaned carb with cleaner and compressed air.
Installed on/off fuel valve
Compression is 120 cold

Starts with choke fine, will even start w/out choke when warm but will die after a bit of riding when you stop giving it throttle.

I have not removed the rubber boot around the pilot and main.
I have not altered anything in the carb.
Floats arent sticking or allowing fuel leaking in.
Carb interior looked ok, ther was some varnish on the pilot and main. It looked like staining. I am really hoping that is the issue and will be fixed with the kit.

If anyone else has suggestions please let me know. Its funny how when the kids atv doesnt work its like your a man on fire. I could have the kfx700 dead in the garage for months before I get it fixed but not the little boys

pull the carb apart again, take the jets out. clean them. clean the orifices and down the axial throat/center of jets. see daylight in orifices. reinstall, start it up.

I did that and can see light, carb was fully stripped, I expect I cant see ENOUGH light through the pilots. I ran a single strand of wire though the jets trying best I could to scrub them.

I also noticed the oil injection port I could not pass a wire though nor blow (mouth) through. I could spray carb clean through it. Is that expected behavior?

When my carb kit lands Im going to intall the new jets, I certainly hope that resolves the issue.

Other thoughts?

i don't use wire on the jets. i use the cleaning tools for the oxy/acetylene torch tip cleaners pack. several "wires" that have filing/scrubbing surface on them. sounds like you're on the right path though.

Plainsman, use the tip cleaners as Jaster suggested, thats all I use, there are multiple sizes with the set that will fit right and clean your jets perfectly.

That rubber thing could be getting crushed and blocking a jet. I leave that out.

Yep going to pull the rubber boot thing. I expect that is there so the quad would die sooner if flipped? Couldnt determine a good reason.

The torch cleaners is a good idea, Ill get some of them too. I do have a kit coming though for the carb.

Regarding the oil injection port, how does that operate? Why would there be a restriction in the port on the carb?

Thanks guys

i really haven't messed with many 2 strokes. i have one myself but haven't really worked on it. it runs flawlessly. i haven't really looked at or really studied it. i presume it operates on the Venturi effect. Correct me if i'm wrong. (siphon) if nobody knows about Venturi. sorry.....hopefully someone will chime right in and correct me if i'm wrong. (i'm probably wrong, but willing to learn more.)

Default update

I ordered a Moose carb kit from ebay.

That landed today, I also bought the torch tip cleaners. The smallest wire couldnt go through the pilot, man its crazy small. I took the old one out and worked to clean it since I had a new one. I pushed and sawed and low and behold a micro dust bunny thing came out as well as some black stuff. The dust bunny appeared to be like lint. When I say this is small its darn small. I had a piece of white styrofoam and a bright light to watch what came out. Put in the new pilot and main started it up and ran down the street with me on it. It ran great and Im a big boy. Drove it more and let it idle, the issue appears to be solved. I also removed the rubber boot that covers the the jets, I just saw no value in that thing. I put in a new gasket too. I think Ill just order a spare kit for $12.

I installed that fuel shutoff valve too, no use tempting the fate of hydrolocking like my Prairie used to.

My new compression tester landed today and I got 135PSI so that made me happy as well.

It looks like the pilots in these are just so small no use even trying to clean just pitch them.

Thanks for the help and insight. Hope this thread helps somone else.

Robert

Glad you got it going.
The pilot jet plugging that hard is rare. I had one last weekend that was full-o-crud but usually a lil blow or poke cleans em right out.
