Default 95 Polaris 300 express

My wifes 1995 300 express runs great for about 30 minutes. It will die if you let it idle down. It won't start for sometimes up to an hour. At that point it starts and runs great. Any suggestions?

Check compression first. When they run and get warm (if you have a worn piston and rings) could be losing compression and they will not idle and die, after cooling down you can sometimes start again.Check this first! If under 100 psi,may be time for at least a fresh top end, plus could be needing crank seal replacement also. OPT

Take the plug out, hold the throttle wide open and use the recoil to see if you can clear any excess gas that could be in the crank case. Check that the plug hasn't fouled out and reinstall it. May have to still hold the throttle wide open until it starts and clears up. Common problem on this especially if it time for new needle and seat in the carb.Gas overflows the carb bowl into the crank case. Most people do forget to turn the fuel valve off on the old 2 strokes.

The oil pumps on the old 250 and 300 machines usually will last the life of the machine. A lot of people don't think they will. If you still want to premix, just drain the oil tank, remove the small line from the pump that goes to the injector on the bottom of the cylinder. This oil injector nipple must be plugged off to keep from sucking air. Small rubber plug cap would work. Premix fuel at a 40-1 ratio. Leave the pump cable hooked up as it's a split cable and works with the throttle cable.

Gave you the wrong answer on the 300,was thinking about the 250. Oil pump is the same for both models, located in the same place, but the oil line goes from the pump to the left side of the carb on your 300,not to the cylinder base like the 250 has. Process is still the same, just pull the line coming from the oil pump and block off the nipple on the carb if you decide to premix..

Might be a good idea to check the belt and clutches out when you have the cover off. With a straight edge across top of both clutches, pull down on top center of the belt. If it has more than 2" slack from the top of the belt to the straight edge, replace the belt.Plus look for glazed worn spots on the belt.Belts can separate also slicing covers up. Older model clutch covers were formed too close to the shape of the clutches not allowing enough air circulation. As a result they would get hot and warp. Usually made noise with front clutch hitting the the cover at an idle, noise eliminated as clutch moved inward. Found plenty of covers that were sliced by belts also, especially right along the air outlet duct. If you bought a new or at least a later model cover they were stronger.Newest ones give plenty of room for air circulation. As far as the rear end shaking,it can be a bent axle, worn axle bearings,or worn swing arm bushings. Even worn out chains/sprockets can cause problems. Just jack the rear end up and check for any play in the axle and swing arm.Plus turn the tires to see if you have a bent axle or wheel along with checking the chain and sprockets. If the chain tightens and then loosens as you turn the wheels, usually sign of frozen/worn links. Plus check for excess side to side play on the chain links. If there is a lot,the chain needs to be replaced.
