TaoTao ATA 125d Hard Time idling From Cold Start
#1
Hi Everyone. I just found this forum and have already learned some great info on our new ATV but would appreciate a little extra help that I haven't been able to find on the forum yet.
We recently took ownership of a slightly used TaoTao 125D. The manufactured date says 11/2009. The original owner we bought it from appears to have taken really good care it and it doesn't appear to have been used much or abused.
When we went to look at it the original owner put some fresh gas in it and it fired right up. Then his daughter took it around the yard for a test spin. It ran and idled great.
It is a great little machine except for one little issue. I have a tough time keeping it running from a cold start (meaning when it's been sitting overnight). When we first start it up for the day I have to hold the throttle in just a little bit for maybe 30 to 45 seconds before it will hold an idle. Once it is warmed up it seems to run and will idle without any issues.
This issue started pretty much the next day after we took it home when our son went to take it out for a spin. I tried to start it with the choke lever all the way up but it dies out almost immediately (even before I can reach down and lower it) so I don't think the choke is even working correctly.
Here is what I did once it started having this issue:
1) Changed the oil and put in fresh Yamaha 10w40 ATV oil.
2) Put in fresh 93 Octane gas with the correct amount of Carb cleaner mixed in it (I drained the old stuff out).
3) Brand new NGK spark plug.
Just short of taking the carb all apart is there anything else I should check?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Manny

Welcome to the forum Evansquad!
Your quad is like all of them... Its jetted lean from the factory to pass EPA/CARB tests.. As a result warm up takes a while... Before jetting all of my 4 strokes leaner I would turn the idle screw in 1/2 turn to hold the idle up during warm up.. it may help to put the choke at the 1/2 position rather than all the way on or off during warm up..

Another thing Ill add...I use Valvoline 10-40wt (yes car oil) in all of my Honda and Chinese 4 strokes.. Been using it for decades in the Hondas... no clutch problems at all.. as a matter of fact my minitrail has its original clutch.. could save you a few dollars in the long run..

Thank you for the advise. How often would you recommend changing things like oil, spark plugs and air filter? Our yard is a relatively flat piece of property and our 6 year old son isn't riding the thing everyday.

6 mos to a year on the oil... unless it looks real dirty..
Filter... clean as needed..
Id replace the plug when it dies.. My minitrail has had the same plug for about 15 years.. Same for the XR75...My Chinese stuff got a NGK when new...none have been replaced..
