1987 trail boss 4x4 barly moves unless your mid throttle
#1
hey all. im new to this site so any help is greatly appreciated. I just bought this quad and rebuilt the engine, carb, new tires, bled the brakes, tightened chains, and new clutch cover. ir runs pretty good other than a liitle hard starting. my problem is the machine rolls fine in nuetral, but in any other gear I cant even push it. when its running it will go forward and backward fine, but it needs way to much gas. it's like the brakes are on. the machine is fighting it self somehow.

In gear it will be hard to push!! You probably need to have the clutch looked at for belt wear plus have the front and rear clutches checked out! Special tools are needed to tear the front clutch apart and the back driven clutch has ramp buttons that wear and need replacement ever so often and the spring has to be pre tensioned when re assembling the clutch. Factory manuals aren't easy to come by on the older models(mine were in old binders for the first models),but a Chilton ,Clymer or Haynes manual may help you on general repairs and maintenance and the clutches were pretty much the same(with various improvements) from 1987 up to introduction of the engine braking clutches in the late 90's.
