1980s Yamaha 400 problems

1980s Yamaha 400 problems
I have an early 80s Yamaha 400 that used to run like a champ. Now when I kick it it just backfires. I'm not sure if I mixed the gas wrong or not. What affect would that have on the bike? Thank you
