polaris Hawkeye no spark...please help diagnose..
#1
I just picked up an 07 hawkeye with no spark.
I did the following tests:
Pulse generator OHMs 477 spec is 520
Coil
Primary: .3 ohms spec is .21
secondary was 2.92 spec is 3.2
I tested the white leads from the stator to the regulator
they all tested at .4 spec was .314
the manual calls for minimum of 10.5 volts DC to the CDI when cranking, I had 9.8
I tried to test the CDI output voltage which should have been in the 200 to 250 Volts DC but I had 11.8 before cranking and 9.8 while cranking.
also when the ignition is on and i move the kill switch to the right or left the lights on the dashboard go out?? that doesnt seem right to me.
so my question is is it just the CDI? or are the other parts suspect as well.
i am a complete novice at this. any advice would be greatly appreciated
thanks in advance.

Kill switch is supposed to kill all power when you move to left or right! All resistance readings are usually + or -20 percent normally. By that then pulse generator and coil readings show to be good by your readings. Voltage going to the cdi shows with in tolerance, but power out is not within tolerance according to your readings. Cdi would seem like the problem,BUT other thing to check is that the battery needs to be fully charged. Resistance readings are not always definite! OPT

You said actual resistance was 477 ohms, 520 ohms rating from manual. This is still within 20% + or- variance? Have you pulled recoil housing to see if any dirt or trash around the flywheel and pulser? OPT

Then possibly you've found the problem

Plus did you ever check for spark with the plug cap off? resistor plug caps can fail. Stator is fairly expensive,$369 at Cycle Parts Warehouse. Unless you can find a wrecked one. Pulse generator not offered separate of stator assembly! You might try Aeon or E-ton as this is the mfg.

well the CDI wasnt the issue. I bought a new one and no luck, I am ordering up a stator and coil this afternoon, I think I would just as soon replace it all and be done with it.
I took the stator off and looked at it, I didnt see any broken wires or anything but I am sure that doesnt matter.
I will let everyone know how it turns out, I will replace just the stator first then the coil, I should know what the culprit was by next Wednesday or so.
if I replace the stator and coil and it doesnt work I will be stumped, I have checked every ground and connection including testing the fuses and fusible link, it has to be the coil or stator at this point,
thanks for the help.

Stators go out usually long before ignition coils and the cdi does! You can take the coil to most cycle shops and have it checked out on a coil checker. I had one and they aren't that expensive and most shops should have em! OPT

well I installed a new stator, coil and still no spark......I have checked and rechecked the grounds everything checks out except output to the coil...
I am at the end of my rope, and pocketbook on this.
one interesting thing... I was checking the DC Volts coming to the CDI and when I turned the key to start it I thought I felt a small shock at the ignition switch.....
any more advice??? before I torch this thing...
